What is cloud hosting in fact? The word 'cloud' seems to be very modern in today's IT, Internet and web hosting phraseology. In spite of that, just a few in fact are familiar with what cloud hosting is. Probably it is a fine idea to educate yourself about cloud hosting services. To render a very long tale short, we will first notify you about what cloud hosting is not.

1. Cloud Hosting is Not Restricted to a Remote Data Storage Only.

1. Delivering a remote disk storage service, which involves one data storage tool for all users, does not turn any given hosting provider into an actual cloud hosting company.

The cPanel web hosting firms dub the ability to provide remote disk storage services a cloud hosting solution. Until now there is nothing wrong with the cloud designation, but... we are talking about hosting services, not remote disk storage solutions for individual or business needs. There's invariably one "but", isn't there? It's not enough to dub a shared web hosting solution, based on a one-server web hosting environment, precisely like cPanel, a "cloud hosting" solution. This is so because the remaining constituents of the entire hosting platform must be functioning in exactly the same way - this does not relate solely to the remote data storage. The other services involved in the whole web hosting procedure also must be remote, separated and "clouded". And that's quite hard. A very meager number of web hosting providers can actually make it.

2. It Involves Domain Names, Mail Accounts, Databases, File Transfer Protocols, Hosting Control Panels, etc.

Cloud hosting is not confined to a remote file storage only. We are talking about a web hosting solution, serving countless domain names, websites, electronic mail aliases, etc., are we not?

To name a web hosting service a "cloud hosting" one demands a lot more than delivering only remote disk storage mounts (or probably servers). The email server(s) must be devoted only to the electronic mail related services. Executing nothing else than these particular tasks. There might be only one or maybe an entire bundle of e-mail servers, based on the overall server load generated. To have a genuine cloud hosting service, the remote database servers should be working as one, regardless of their real amount. Carrying out nothing different. The same goes for the users' web hosting Control Panels, the FTP, etc.

3. There are Cloud Domain Name Servers (DNSs) too.

The DNSs (Domain Name Servers) of an actual cloud hosting accounts provider will support numerous data center locations on multiple continents.

Here's an example of a Domain Name Server of an actual cloud hosting company:

dns1.uk-hq.net

dns2.uk-hq.net

If such a DNS is supplied by your hosting services provider, it's not a sure thing that there is a cloud web hosting environment in use, but you can definitely be confident when you discern a DNS like the one beneath:

dns658.hostgator.com

dns659.hostgator.com

that there isn't any cloud web hosting platform. This sort of DNS merely manifests that the web hosting environment in use is one-single-server based. Perhaps it's cPanel. cPanel is a one-server hosting solution and holds a market share of more than 98%. In cPanel's case, a single physical machine deals with all web hosting services (web, electronic mail, DNS, databases, FTP, hosting Control Panel(s), files, etc.).

Remote File Storage - The Perverted Characterization of Cloud Hosting.

So, a cloud hosting service is not confined solely to a remote data storage solution, as lots of hosting providers wish it was. Unfortunately for them, if that was the case, the majority of the file hosting suppliers would have been categorized as cloud hosting ones a long time back! They are not classified as such, as they plainly deliver file hosting services, not cloud web hosting solutions. The file web hosting platform looks really very plain, when compared to the hosting platform. The remote disk storage platform is not a cloud hosting platform. It cannot be, as it's merely one simple fraction of the entire cloud hosting platform. There's a lot more to be found in the cloud hosting platform: the CP cloud, the database clouds (MySQL, PostgreSQL), the DNS cloud, the FTP cloud, the e-mail cloud and... in the near future, maybe a few brand new clouds we presently don't know about will turn up out of the blue.
